Plans have been finalized for the return of the city’s annual Fourth of July celebration, which will be held this year on Saturday, July 3, and Sunday, July 4.
“We have the Independence Day holiday coming up and since we don’t have another council meeting before then, I wanted to share with you and the public some of the events that we’ll have going on during that weekend,” City Manager Matt Wojnowski told the council during its regular meeting Tuesday.
Wojnowski outlined the schedule of events as follows:
Saturday, July 3
8 a.m. – 10 a.m. 5K fun run/walk at Dr. Alfredo Gutierrez Amphitheatre on the San Felipe Creek
10:30 a.m. Fourth of July Parade on South Main Street; parade begins at South Main and Ogden streets and ends at South Main and Nicholson
11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Independence Day Car Show at Dr. Alfredo Gutierrez Amphitheatre on the San Felipe Creek
9 p.m. Free movie at Dr. Alfredo Gutierrez Amphitheatre on the San Felipe Creek
Sunday, July 4
7 p.m. Flyover by Laughlin Air Force Base aircraft at Dr. Alfredo Gutierrez Amphitheatre on the San Felipe Creek
9 p.m. Free movie at Dr. Alfredo Gutierrez Amphitheatre on the San Felipe Creek
10 p.m. Fourth of July Fireworks show
“I want to welcome everybody and invite them out to the events we are having this year. It is a start, now that COVID has reduced, and next year will be even better,” the city manager said.
“I want to reiterate to the public that the Fourth of July Parade is actually going to be Saturday, July 3, and it starts at 10:30 in the morning, so the parade is on Saturday this year, just in case our constituents ask us,” Mayor Bruno “Ralphy” Lozano said.
Lozano asked if there were any comments or questions about the event, and Councilwoman Alexandra Falcon Calderon asked where entry forms for the parade could be found.
“Ms. Esme Meza is taking applications if you want to be in the parade, and that has been shared on Facebook as well,” Wojnowski replied.
Meza said applications for anyone interested in being in the parade are available at the city’s parks and recreation office, 309 Cantu St., and also at City Hall. There is also a link to parade entry forms on the city’s Facebook page and on the city’s web site. Simply type “Fourth of July parade registration” into the city’s home page search feature.
Meza said once the application is completed it would be placed in her mailbox at City Hall.
“Have you had any entries?” Calderon asked.
“Yes, we’ve had over 10,” Meza said.
Calderon said she has picked up several entries and distributed them around the city.
“Can you remind the public if it’s free or if there’s a charge to be in the parade?” Wojnowski said.
“To be in the parade, the 5K, the movies, everything is free,” Meza replied.
