Del Rio firefighters on Thursday spent about an hour extinguishing a blaze just outside the city landfill.
The landfill is located at the end of Railway Avenue and south of U.S. Highway 90 on the city’s east side.
Del Rio Fire Department Chief David Harrison made the following statement about the blaze after the 830 Times contacted the city Thursday afternoon for more information:
“At 3:57 p.m. (Thursday), a fire was reported at the landfill off Railway Avenue. Three fire department units responded with nine personnel. Fire personnel arrived to find a large pile of televisions and other small appliances on fire and spreading. Fire personnel deployed several hose lines and began attacking the fire.
“The fire was under control at 4:52 p.m. (Thursday). The City of Del Rio Public Works department sent out backhoes and an employee with Red River (Waste Solutions) utilized a bulldozer to spread out the pile for final extinguishment by fire department personnel,” Harrison said.
The fire chief noted the “fire was completely extinguished, and fire personnel were back in service at 6:48 p.m. (Thursday).”
Harrison said the cause of the blaze was undetermined.
