Very cold weather will descend on Val Verde County again today, and the city of Del Rio has announced it will open a warming facility in the civic center.

The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory for later today into Wednesday morning and an extreme cold watch from Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

The city of Del Rio announced Monday it will activate a warming center in the Cottonwood Room at the Del Rio Civic Center, 1915 Veterans Blvd., beginning at 6 p.m. today through 9 a.m. Friday, according to a post on its social media page.

“With cold temperatures approaching, the city of Del Rio has opened a warming center at the civic center. . . to provide a warm, safe space for those in need,” the post reads.

Anyone who needs transportation to the warming center is asked to call the city’s transportation department at 830-774-8690 during the day or 830-347-0579 after hours for a free ride to the civic center.

“Quiet hours” at the center are 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Pets are welcome, but dogs must be on leashes, and cats must be in carriers.

Center staff will provide cots and blankets, but those using the center are asked to bring personal essentials, such as clothing, toiletries, food and medications.

For more information, people in Del Rio are asked to contact the city’s emergency management office at 830-775-2313.
