City of Del Rio Responds to Fire at Vacant Structure on Avenue J

City of Del Rio press release

On October 13, 2025, at approximately 3:00 p.m., a fire occurred at a vacant building located at 300-302 Avenue J. The structure, previously identified as a public safety hazard due to repeated unauthorized occupancy and criminal activity, had been slated for demolition. Legal proceedings to resolve ownership and tax-related issues had delayed final action.

The City of Del Rio had been actively pursuing demolition authorization through the municipal court, district court, and the Building and Standards Commission. Law enforcement had responded to multiple incidents at the site, including one involving an assault on officers.

No injuries were reported in connection with the fire. According to Fire Chief David Harrison, the Del Rio Fire Department, in consultation with the Code Enforcement Department, made the decision to allow the fire to burn in a controlled manner under close supervision. This approach was taken due to the presence of hazardous materials inside the structure that posed health and safety risks to emergency personnel.

The Public Works Department was on site to assist with debris removal and will continue efforts to secure the area. No trespassing signage will be installed to ensure public safety. The structures have since been demolished, and the American Red Cross assisted four individuals affected by the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities are also evaluating whether any neighboring properties sustained damage.

City officials reaffirm their commitment to public safety and will continue to address unsafe structures through all available legal channels.
