The community is in mourning today as the news of the passing of Del Rio High School Principal Dr. Jose F. Perez continues to filter through town.
Perez, who had served as the principal of the school since 2016, died suddenly Saturday. Details regarding Perez’s death have not yet been publicly released, and administrators at the San Felipe Del Rio CISD said the district would issue a statement regarding his passing, including his career with the district, in the days to come.
“It was because of him I continued my education,” Jose Piña posted on an announcement of Perez’s passing on Facebook.
“He really helped my son a lot. If it wasn’t for him my son wouldn’t be where he is now,” Celeste Rodriguez wrote on the same announcement.
Perez was a career educator within the San Felipe CISD. According to his LinkedIn page, Perez was a teacher at San Felipe Middle School from July 1993 to June 2002 before he was assigned to Del Rio High School as an assistant principal.
He served as an assistant principal at the school until June 2008 when he was assigned his first principal position. For eight years, from July 2008 to June 2016, he served as principal at Dr. Fermin Calderon Elementary and Ruben Chavira Elementary schools.
In July 2016 he was named as principal at Del Rio High School following the passing of Briana Muraira, who had only been principal for about a month before her death.
Aside from his tenure as an educator, Perez was also active in the community, serving as a member of the San Felipe Lions Club and was a board member with the United Way Val Verde County. He also previously served as a lector with St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Trinity Mortuary posted the following information regarding Perez’s funeral services on its website Monday afternoon:
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, July 30, 2021 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
