Del Rio City Council members have appointed John Sheedy IV as interim city manager.
Sheedy is the city’s emergency management director, most recently shepherding the city’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was appointed interim city manager during the council’s regular meeting Tuesday.
Following a discussion by the council in executive session, Mayor Bruno “Ralphy” Lozano announced no action had been taken behind closed doors and made the motion to appoint Sheedy as interim city manager effective July 31.
Councilman Steven Webb gave the second.
Before making the motion to appoint Sheedy, Lozano said, “It has been brought to the attention of the city council and the mayor’s office that the city manager’s last day will be July 30. With that being said, the city council did take some time to consider a plan of action to ensure we have a reasonable transition regarding the positions.
“I’d like the city manager to bring back information regarding city manager salaries from cities that are comparable in size to the city of Del Rio, including Eagle Pass, Kerrville and other cities of those sizes so that we on the city council can discuss city manager pay compensation and benefits,” Lozano said.
“Also, when we get that, if we can get the most recent version of the city manager qualifications so we can discuss and decide if we want to change any of those,” Councilman Jim DeReus added.
Lozano asked City Manager Matt Wojnowski to place an item on the executive session agenda for the council’s next meeting for further discussion of the city manager position.
Wojnowski recently confirmed he has accepted as position as assistant city manager for the city of Hutto, Texas.
Lozano then reiterated his earlier motion to appoint Sheedy as the city’s interim city manager.
The council then voted 6-1 to approve the mayor’s motion, with Councilwoman Alexandra Falcon Calderon giving the sole vote in opposition.
