Members of Val Verde County Commissioners Court were joined by a Del Rio family that has faced childhood cancer while issuing a proclamation designating September as “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.”
County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. and the members of county commissioners court issued the proclamation during the court’s Aug. 28 regular meeting.
The proclamation read as follows:
“Whereas, year after year, pediatric cancer interrupts the childhood and seriously limits the potential of thousands of our youth; and whereas, pediatric cancer remains the leading cause of disease-related death for children; and, whereas, many childhood cancers are considered curable, but survival may come at a price; and
“Whereas, about one in 500 young adults is a childhood cancer survivor and two-thirds of the survivors later experience significant and chronic health conditions; and, whereas, research for childhood cancer makes a difference, and your support matters to save the lives of children today and keep them healthy in the future; and
“Whereas, Brooke’s Blossoming Hope for Childhood Cancer Foundation promotes awareness for childhood cancer and helps create a level of empowerment within their community to bring forth changes for the future of children fighting, surviving and those yet to be diagnosed with pediatric cancers; and whereas, during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, our nation comes together to remember all those whose lives were cut short by pediatric cancer, to recognize the loved ones know too well the pain it causes and to support every child and every family battling cancer each day,
“Now, therefore, Val Verde County Commissioners Court does hereby proclaim the month of September 2024 as Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month,” the proclamation reads.
After the proclamation was read, Owens invited Del Rioans Casie and Joey De Luna and their daughter, five-year-old Alena De Luna, to join the court for a photo.
