David Allen Medina is seeking the Democratic Party nomination for the office of Val Verde County Commissioner Pct. 1.
Medina is one of seven candidates who will be on the ballot for the office in the March 5 Democratic Party Primary Election.
Medina was born and raised in Del Rio. He attended Del Rio schools and graduated from Del Rio High School in 1988.
Medina went to work after graduating from high school, starting off as a helper, then a route driver, for the Coors beer distributorship here. Medina worked there for about 12 years, then went to work for an oil rig in El Dorado, Texas.
Medina worked hauling disposable water tankers, and he was there for about two or three years, before returning to Del Rio and going to work for Val Verde County, where he has worked for the past 14 years.
Medina hired on as a light equipment operator, a position he currently holds, working for Precinct 2. He assists other Precinct 2 crew members in caring for the precinct’s parks, picking up brush.
Medina spoke about why he decided to seek election to the office of county commissioner.
“I decided to run for commissioner because I know the neighborhood. People have asked me, ‘Why don’t you run? Give it a shot. It doesn’t hurt to try.’ So that’s what I’m doing. It doesn’t hurt to try.
“I think people are ready for something different, someone who’s going to work hard to better the community, try to do better for the community. Go forward, don’t go back,” Medina said.
Medina also said there are plans and projects he would like to work on if he is elected.
“There are a lot of things I would like to work on if I’m elected. I would like to observe things first before I throw it out there. I have a lot of plans and priorities, things that need to be done,” he said.
Medina said he believes his entire career as a working man qualifies him to lead the precinct.
“I understand the people there, what they’re looking for, what they want to see in their county commissioner. I understand what needs to be done in the precinct, and I think I could do a good job at it,” he said.
Medina also said he has worked helping raise funds for projects and organizations like the San Felipe Exes.
Asked why the voters of Precinct 1 should cast their ballots for him, Medina said, “I would like you to vote for me because I think I can make a change. I can make a change. My ears are open to you. What do you want to see? What do you suggest? What do you think needs to be done?
“I’m an easygoing person. I listen when people talk to me. I’m easy to communicate with, and I want people to know I’ll be there for them, to help them out as much as I can,” Medina said.
