NEWS — Del Rio gets first real rain in seven months

Brief showers moistened Del Rio Thursday, and although the rain total was just under half an inch, it is the most rain the city has seen in one day in more than seven months.

According to the Del Rio climate summary from the National

Weather Service Austin/San Antonio, which can be viewed on the National Weather Service’s web site at www.noaa.com, Del Rio received a total of .49 inches of rain Thursday, bringing the total rain the city has received so far this month to .59 inches. Del Rio’s record rainfall for May 8 fell in 1980, when the city saw a rain total of 1.58 inches.

So far this year, the city has received a total of 1.64 inches of rain, 2.85 inches less than the 4.49 inches considered the “normal value” by this time each year.

Thursday’s rains were also the heaviest single-day total Del Rio has seen since Sept. 3, 2024, when 4.56 inches of rain drenched the city.

Since then, the amount of the rain the city has received has fallen steeply.

From a total of 6.68 inches of rain recorded in September 2024, Del Rio saw a total of 0.01 inches of rain in October 2024, 0.23 inches in November 2024 and 0.18 inches in December 2024.

Things stayed dry with the coming of 2025: In January, Del Rio received a total of 0.26 inches. In February, a total of 0.01 inches was recorded, and 0.17 inches was recorded in March.

April was slightly wetter, with a total of 0.61 inches recorded throughout the month. The last rain of any significance fell on the city April 20, when a total of .38 inches was recorded.

As of Thursday, the southern half of Val Verde County remains in an “exceptional drought,” according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

The northern half of Val Verde County is considered to be in a state of “extreme drought,” with a small sliver along the county’s northern border in “severe drought.”
