Del Rio Fire Department report
Del Rio firefighters responded to a variety of calls during the first week of the year, according to reports released by the Del Rio Fire Department on Jan. 9 and Jan. 2.
Jan. 1
- Engine 1, Engine 6, Engine 8 and Command 1 were dispatched to a residence in the 600 block of Arteaga Street for a structure fire. Firefighters reported when they arrived, they saw smoke coming from the back of the house. Firefighters entered and found a washing machine that had caught fire. Firefighters pulled the washing machine out of the house and put out the fire with a water extinguisher. Engine 1 personnel assisted in ventilating the house, checking the residence for possible hidden fires and gathering information from the property owners before returning to service. Command 1 reported that due to the fire and smoke damage to the home, the Red Cross was notified, and arrangements were made for temporary shelter for three adults and two children.
- Engine 8 was dispatched to the intersection of Hernandez and Chapoy Streets for a small brush fire. Firefighters reported when they arrived, they found a small area of leaves on fire. They extinguished the fire, and after verifying no further hazards were present, returned to service.
- Engine 8 was dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of East Gutierrez Street for a medical assist call.
- Engine 1 was dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of East Martin Street for a medical assist call.
- Engine 1 was dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of East Losoya Street for a medical assist call.
- Engine 8 was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of East Garza Street for a medical assist call.
- Engine 6 was dispatched a residence in the 1700 block of North Main Street for a medical assist call.
- Engine 8 responded to the 200 block of Space Circle for a trash fire. Firefighters reported when they arrived they found the trashcan and extinguished the small fire. The firefighters reported they found no other hazards.
- Engine 1was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Calderon Lane for a ground fire. Firefighters reported when they arrived, they found “smoke and some fire from mixed vegetation.” They reported they found the property owner trying to put out the fire with a hose. Firefighters reported colleagues from the Val Verde County Fire Department were in the area and brought a brush truck to assist in extinguishing the fire. The DRFD’s Attack 1 also responded. Firefighters reported a barbecue grill left unattended near dry brush caused the fire. After the fire and hotspots were extinguished, Engine 1 returned to service.
Jan. 2
- Engine 6 was dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of East Fifth Street for a medical assist call.
- Truck 1 was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Buckthorn Trail for a medical assist call.
- Engine 8 was dispatched to the intersection of U.S. 90 East and Harris Drive for a motor vehicle collision. Firefighters reported when they arrived, DRPD officers were already on scene. The motor vehicle collision had apparently involved a tractor-trailer and a black pickup truck. Firefighters reported both drivers were out of their vehicles and walking when they arrived, and both said they did not need medical attention. Firefighters reported once EMS cleared the scene, they returned to service.
- Engine 1 was dispatched to a residence in the 1100 block of West Martin Street for a medical assist call.
- Engine 6 was dispatched to the 100 block of West Seventh Street for a child locked inside a running vehicle. Firefighters arrived and informed the owner of the vehicle that by using their “lock out kit” on the vehicle, there was a possibility it would sustain cosmetic damage. The firefighters then forced entry into the vehicle and returned to service.
- Engine 3 and Engine 8 were dispatched to a building in the 500 block of South Main Street to investigate a report of a smoke smell. Firefighters reported when they arrived, they could smell “a light odor of smoke” in the building, but found no hazards. Firefighter advised the building’s occupants to be observant and call if any changes were noted.
- Truck 1 was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Hackberry Lane to assist someone locked out of their house. Firefighters informed the person who had been locked out that potential structural damage might occur if they pried open the door. The firefighters pried open the door, allowing the homeowner to enter the house and returned to service.
- Truck 1 responded to a residence in the 100 block of Medicine Bow Trail for a medical assist call.
Jan. 3
- Engine 6/Company 4 was dispatched to a building in the 700 block of Avenue G to assist law enforcement personnel with opening a safe. Firefighters assisted law enforcement officers at the scene and returned to service.
- Engine 6/Company 4 was dispatched to the parking lot outside the Plaza Del Sol Mall for a locked vehicle. Firefighters opened the vehicle and returned to service.
- Engine 6/Company 4 responded to Buena Vista Elementary School for an automatic alarm. Firefighters reported after they arrived, they spoke to an electrician who said he had been working near the smoke detector and unintentionally activated the alarm. No further action was taken by the firefighters.
- Truck 1 was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Pauline Drive for a medical assist call.
Jan. 4
- Truck 1 was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Medicine Bow Trail for a medical assist call.
- Engine 6 was dispatched to a business at 200 Veterans Blvd. for a medical assist call.
- Truck 1 was dispatched to Buena Vista Elementary School for an automatic alarm. Firefighters reported a staff member was on-site when they arrived. Firefighters entered the school and performed a walk-through of the school and found no hazards.
Jan. 5
- Engine 6 was dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of Marshall Smith Drive for a medical assist call.
- Truck 1 was dispatched to the parking lot outside J.C. Penney’s in the Plaza Del Sol Mall for a cat trapped inside the engine compartment of a vehicle. Firefighters successfully located and removed the cat from the engine compartment. They reported the cat fled, but no injuries to the cat or damage to the vehicle were reported.
- Truck 1 was dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of Enchanted Way for a report of a “rotten egg smell.” Firefighters reported when they arrived, they spoke to the homeowner, who said that there were no gas lines or gas appliances in the home. Firefighters reported they inspected the property and found an open sewage line in the garage, which was determined to be the source of the smell.
Jan. 6
- Engine 1 was dispatched to the intersection of Pecan and Nicholson Streets for a transformer that had arced and caused a fire on the ground. Firefighters reported when they arrived on scene, they found a small pile of leaves on the ground had caught fire, but the fire was out when they arrived. Firefighters advised dispatch to contact AEP after finding no other hazards.
- Engine 6/Company 4 was dispatched to Del Rio High School for an automatic alarm. Firefighters reported when they arrived, they learned that the alarm was on the security side, not the fire side.
Jan. 7
- Engine 8 was dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of East Chapoy Street for a medical assist.
- Engine 1 was dispatched to a residence in the 1000 block of West Garza Street for a medical assist.
- Engine 1 was dispatched to the intersection of De Leon and Las Vacas Streets for a downed power line. Firefighters reported when they arrived they found a communication line lying across the road. The firefighters moved the line and asked dispatch to notify Spectrum.
- Engine 1 was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of West Broadway Street for a vehicle smoking from under the hood. Firefighters reported when they arrived, the owner of the vehicle informed them that a hose in the vehicle’s engine had broken and sprayed water on the engine, causing it to steam.
- Engine 1/Company 1 was dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of Griner Street for a medical assist.
- Engine 6 was dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of Cochran Street for a medical assist.
