Val Verde County voters will go back to the polls beginning May 20 for primary runoff elections.
Precinct 3 Republicans and Precinct 1 Democrats will select their party’s nominee for county commissioner to appear on the ballot in the November General Election.
County Republicans will also cast ballots in a runoff for the party’s nomination for District 23 in the U.S. House of Representatives. That race pits the incumbent, Tony Gonzales, against challenger Brandon Herrera.
Early voting in the runoffs begins at 7 a.m. Monday, May 20. Early voting for all precincts will be conducted in the old county court-at-law building, 207B E. Losoya St., according to County Clerk Teresa Esther Chapoy, who will administer the election.
Chapoy said any Republican who voted in the March 5 Republican Party Primary Election may only vote Republican in the runoff.
Similarly, any Democrat who voted in the Democratic Party Primary Election and resides in Precinct 1 may vote in the Democratic Party Primary Runoff Election.
“Anyone who did not vote in the primary at all can vote Democratic or Republican, but to vote in the Precinct 1 Democratic Party Primary Runoff, the voter must be registered as residing in Precinct 1,” Chapoy said.
“Anyone who did not vote in the primary at all can vote Democratic or Republican, but to vote in the Precinct 3 Republican Party Primary Runoff, the voter must be registered as residing in Precinct 3,” Chapoy added.
Chapoy added the runoff “does give persons who didn’t get to vote in the primary a chance to vote.”
Early voting by personal appearance in the runoff election will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, May 20, through Friday, May 24.
Voters who don’t take advantage of the early voting period will have one final chance to cast their ballots on Tuesday, May 28.
