Filing ended Monday for candidates seeking a place on the ballot for the March 2022 Democratic Party Primary Election in Val Verde County.
Val Verde County Democratic Party Chair Rosalinda Hernandez and other local Democratic Party leaders gathered at Hernandez’s home before the 6 p.m. filing deadline to receive last-minute applications. They were joined by a number of the candidates.
A total of 15 Democratic candidates have filed for 12 open county offices.
The following positions will go before Val Verde County voters in 2022: 83rd Judicial District Judge, County Judge, County Court-At-Law Judge, District Clerk, County Clerk, County Treasurer, County Surveyor, County Commissioner Pct. 2, County Commissioner Pct. 4, Justice of the Peace Pct. 1, Justice of the Peace Pct. 2, Justice of the Peace Pct. 3 and Justice of the Peace Pct. 4.
Democrats currently hold most of those positions.
Voters in 2022 will first cast a ballot in either the Democratic Party Primary Election or in the Republican Party Primary Election, which is set for March 1, 2022. Then voters will cast ballots in the November 2022 General Election.
The following Democratic Party incumbents have filed for re-election and are unopposed, either by a Democratic Party challenger in the March 2022 Primary Election or by a Republican Party challenger in the November 2022 General Election:
- Val Verde County Court-At-Law Judge Sergio Gonzalez
- Val Verde County Treasurer Aaron Rodriguez
- Val Verde County Surveyor Abner Martinez
- Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 Antonio “Tony” Faz II
- Justice of the Peace Pct. 4 Hilda Castillo Lopez
Val Verde County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. will seek re-election to the position he currently holds. Owens has drawn no Democratic Party challengers and will run unopposed in the primary election. He has drawn a Republican Party opponent for the November 2022 General Election.
District Clerk Jo Ann Cervantes, who has also filed for re-election to the seat she currently holds, has drawn no Democratic Party challengers, but will face a Republican Party opponent in the general election.
Val Verde County Clerk Generosa “Janie” Ramon has filed for re-election to the position she currently holds. Ramon will run unopposed in the 2022 Democratic Party Primary Election, but will face a Republican Party opponent in the November 2022 General Election.
Val Verde County Commissioner Pct. 2 Juan Carlos Vazquez has filed for re-election to the county commissioner seat he currently holds. Vazquez will face Rose Marie Coronado Castro, who works as a greeter at Val Verde Regional Medical Center, in the March 2022 Primary Election. Vazquez has also drawn a Republican Party opponent in the November 2022 General Election.
Val Verde County Commissioner Pct. 4 Gustavo “Gus” Flores has filed for re-election to the county commissioner seat he currently holds. Flores will face two Democratic Party challengers in the March 2022 Primary Election. They are Alfredo “Fred” Carranza Jr. and Juan Francisco DeHoyos. Carranza is the manager of Brown Nissan of Del Rio and currently serves as a member of the Del Rio City Council. DeHoyos is a retired county employee, where he worked as a precinct foreman. No Republican Party candidate has filed for this seat.
Justice of the Peace Pct. 1 Jesse James Treviño has filed for re-election to the position he currently holds. Treviño will face a challenger in the March 2022 Primary Election: former Del Rio Police Department officer Ramon “Ray” Hernandez, who is currently self-employed. There are no Republican Party candidates for this position.
