Jose Sarduy, a nationally-known comic and television host, is slotted to entertain at the Del Rio and Laughlin Annual Awards Banquet March 9.
The social hour will kick off by 6 p.m. and dinner will be at 7 p.m.
“Our community has been through a lot the last year or so,” said Blanca Larson, Del Rio Chamber of Commerce executive director. “Rather than go down a more serious route, which we’ve done in the past, we thought it’d be more fun to have Jose come and entertain us and give us some laughs.”
“I’m really looking forward to performing in Del Rio,” Sarduy said, from the Turks and Caicos Islands where he was performing on a cruise ship. “I consider Del Rio to be one of my hometowns.”
When Sarduy isn’t touring the nation or the high seas entertaining audiences, he can often be found at Laughlin Air Force Base, training student pilots as a Reservist.
“I’ve got many great memories from Del Rio and it’s great to be able to perform there,” he said. “Although I’ll be a little extra nervous because I’ll know so many people in the audience.”
Sarduy, who’s family fled Cuba shortly after he was born and settled in Miami, has numerous television shows under his belt and has plenty of stage time under his belt.
His most recent online television success is from the Dry Bar Comedy special where two of his performances were the fourth and fifth most watched shows, edging out some of the top comics in America.
Although he’s performed in all 50 states, many of his performances lately have been on cruise ships, where he can be found on stage for three to four months per year.
Larson knows the community will embrace him and is working hard to sell the event out.
“Right now, our focus is trying to sell tables,” she said.
Individual tickets are $25 and tables are $500. Dress is business attire for civilians and service dress for military.
“I really see Jose as the perfect person for this event because this is the Del Rio/Laughlin banquet, and he’s got a huge presence in both communities,” Larson said.
Tickets can be purchased by calling 830-775-3551 or visiting the chamber at 1915 Veterans Blvd.
