Del Rio businessman J.P. Sanchez was sworn in Tuesday to his second term on the Del Rio City Council.

Sanchez was sworn in after winning re-election to the Councilperson At-Large, Place B, seat on the city council. Sanchez was unopposed in his election bid and was declared “duly elected” during the city council canvass of the May 4 General Election returns during a special meeting of the council.

City Secretary Mari Acosta administered the statement of officer and the oath of office to Sanchez, who stood in the center of council chambers with his wife Rosa Linda Sanchez at his side.

Sanchez then returned to his seat on the council dais amidst a round of applause from the other council members and the audience.

Sanchez spoke to The 830 Times after the meeting.

“I really thought someone would come forward and run against me, and we were just praying and praying and praying, and then when nobody did, we were like, ‘hallelujah!’ This is awesome. I had two of my grandkids here tonight (at the swearing-in ceremony), and my wife was here, of course. She’s everything to me, so I’m very pleased,” Sanchez said.

Asked to look ahead, Sanchez said, “I’m very excited about what’s going on in the city, and that I’m getting a chance to help continue what we’re doing. We’re having to deal with this water issue, and that’s a big issue, a critical issue, and we have to keep our focus on it or the problem is going to get bigger and bigger.

“It’s very important to me that we do something about that, get something done on that,” he added.
