Val Verde County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. said Del Rioans should brace themselves for increasing number of immigrants in the community.

Owens made his remarks Monday night during a Memorial Day video posted on his personal Facebook page.

“You’re going to see more and more people – immigrants – out on our streets,” Owens said.

He added Border Patrol officials “are being overwhelmed” with the number of immigrants crossing from Mexico into Val Verde County. The non-governmental organization assisting the released immigrants in making expeditious travel arrangements out of Del Rio is also being overwhelmed, Owens said.

“The policies that we have in the United States today do not work. The policy that we’re following today does not work. It’s that simple,” Owens said, adding area residents should contact their elected officials and tell them the current situation “is not acceptable.”

“But what we have right now, it’s just not right. It’s not right, and everybody said we weren’t going to be able to sustain what was coming. It’s not sustainable, and we’re there,” Owens said.

The judge also encouraged those who “don’t feel comfortable” around the immigrants, to “not be around them.”
