Val Verde County’s election website has received an “outstanding” rating from the League of Women Voters of Texas.
The award was announced during Wednesday’s meeting of Val Verde County Commissioners Court.
Commissioner Pct. 4 Gustavo “Gus” Flores, serving as county judge pro-tem in the absence of County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr., who was out of town, announced the agenda item.
Flores told the court and audience, “Val Verde County was given a

assistant chief deputy for an award given to the county clerk’s election website by the

certificate for providing accurate, accessible and useful voter information on a safe and secure election website.”
The court unanimously accepted the certificate on a motion by Commissioner Pct. 2 Juan Carlos Vazquez and a second by Commissioner Pct. 1 Kerr Wardlaw.
County Clerk Teresa Esther Chapoy went to the podium to show the court the certificate her office had received.
“I owe it all to Cynthia Reyes, who is my assistant chief deputy. The certificate is made out to Val Verde County, but if elections should ever get an office of their own, we’d want to put it on our wall, but we just wanted you all to know that we were recognized as ‘outstanding’ for our website,” Chapoy told the court.
“Great work,” Flores said and led the court and audience in a round of applause for the county clerk’s achievement.
According to its website, www.lwvtexas.org, the League of Women Voters of Texas “is a nonpartisan, grassroots civic organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy.”
The website also notes, “Membership in the League is open to people 16 years of age and older of all gender identities. With 100 years of experience, the League is one of America’s oldest and most trusted civic nonprofit organizations.”
