Hernandez has grown in popularity by creating illustrations and covers of comics for the past three years. Hernandez spoke with The 830 Times about his passion for drawing and pop culture and what led him to sell his own work.
Hernandez is recognized in Del Rio for helping with community projects and events, and he is known by his friends for his love of comics and Star Wars. During 2022, he was inspired by the art he saw online, and thus he began to create his own illustrations and sell his art on the Whatnot shopping app.
“Being an artist is what I always wanted to do, and I love comic book artwork,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez then began showcasing his work at conventions locally and in several other states. The first convention where Hernandez showcased his artwork was the San Diego Rocket Con in 2022.
As for his hometown, Hernandez had his first booth at DRCC in 2022, and since then, he has made it a point to attend his hometown’s conventions.
Since venturing out as an artist, Hernandez has not only traveled to other cities, but has crossed paths with well-known artists like Canadian Todd McFarlane, an artist on the Spawn comics, and Marvel and DC Comics super-artist Rodney Ramos.
Hernandez is also known for working on Upperdeck’s “Allegiance: Avengers vs X-Men” and creating its card sets.
As he carved his path as an artist, Hernandez has released five published comic book covers and two comic-book-focused card sets. He has also sold over 1,500 pieces of commissioned art on Whatnot and still sells commissioned work for collectors around the world.
For this year’s DRCC, Hernandez said he is looking to have covers of the Transformers and G.I. Joe comic projects he has worked on with Maximus Books N’ More, an online shop based in Del Rio. The G.I. Joe comic he collaborated on releases this month.
While talking to The 830 Times, Hernandez gave a big surprise and said he is inviting screenwriter Paco Farias, co-writer of “The Long Game,” and Baldemar Rodriguez to talk at DRCC about their upcoming comic series “Catrina.” Hernandez created the illustrations and character designs for “Catrina,” and he will show images of his involvement at DRCC.
While on the subject of Del Rio, Hernandez said DRCC is great for first-time
