NEWS — Man arrested after fleeing officer on foot

The following information was provided by the Del Rio Police Department.

A Del Rio man was arrested May 23 after allegedly fleeing from a Del Rio Police Department officer who attempted to stop him while he was operating a motorcycle without a license plate.

According to police, at approximately 9:34 a.m., an officer patrolling the area of East Gutierrez Street observed a motorcycle being operated on a public roadway without a license plate as required by law.

The officer recognized the driver as Rene S. Garcia, 31, and knew Garcia had an active felony warrant issued by the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office for possession of a controlled substance, Penalty Group 1/1-B, 1 gram or more but less than 4 grams.

Police said the officer activated the emergency lights on his patrol vehicle in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. Garcia stopped the motorcycle in the 300 block of East Gutierrez Street and began walking toward the front door of a residence.

Despite multiple verbal commands to stop, Garcia allegedly refused to comply and fled on foot eastbound.

During the pursuit, the officer deployed his department-issued TASER, but it was ineffective, according to the release. Garcia was later apprehended near the intersection of Gutierrez Street and Contreras Street without further incident.

Garcia was taken into custody on the outstanding felony warrant and charged with evading arrest or detention.

Police said a computerized criminal history check conducted during processing at the Del Rio Police Department revealed Garcia had a prior conviction for evading arrest or detention. As a result, the current charge was enhanced.

Garcia was charged with evading arrest or detention with a previous conviction and was later transferred to the GEO Correctional Facility pending magistration.
