A 28-year-old Del Rio man was arrested on a felony assault charge after he allegedly tried to strangle a female family member, police said.
Agapito Esquivel Salinas, 106 Danielle Drive, was arrested and charged with the offense of assault/family or household member/impeding breath, a third-degree felony, Del Rio Police Department Cpl. Dulce Gonzalez said Tuesday.
Gonzalez said Salinas was arrested after DRPD Officer Christopher Lauritzen was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Danielle Drive at 9:10 a.m. Dec. 31 for a disturbance in progress.
“Upon arrival, Officer Lauritzen made contact with a male subject that was standing outside the residence. The officer observed the male subject had a small laceration to the left ear, and the officer also learned the man had been arguing with a female household member,” Gonzalez said.
Lauritzen then spoke to the woman, who was inside the residence, who told him she had been assaulted by the man, identified as Salinas.
“She reported she was struck, and she also reported the male subject strangled her with one hand and also grabbed and pulled on her hair with the other hand. She reported difficulty breathing and reported feeling pain,” Gonzalez said.
“At one point during the argument, the woman said she threw a plate at the man, causing the small laceration on his ear,” Gonzalez added.
The woman exhibited visible injuries from the assault, including red marks around her neck and swelling on the left side of her face. Lauritzen reported an emergency medical services team from Val Verde Regional Medical Center was dispatched to the residence to evaluate her injuries, but no one was transported to the hospital following the evaluation.
“Due to the male subject’s impeding the female’s breath and assaulting her, he was placed under arrest and transported to the police station for booking and processing, and an emergency protective order was applied for,” Gonzalez said.
