NEWS — Man arrested for racing

On 2/26/2024, at approximately 7:41 p.m. a Del Rio Police Department officer was patrolling southbound at the 2600 block of Veterans Blvd. when he heard a vehicle with a loud exhaust near the area. The officer then observed a black in color Ford Mustang and a Black in color Dodge Charger traveling northbound at a high rate of speed.

The officer positioned his patrol unit behind such vehicles and observed the two vehicles accelerate to speeds in excess of 70- mph in a 55-mph zone near the intersection of Agarita Dr. and Veterans Blvd. The officer observed the two vehicles participate in a competition of speed as they traveled side by side attempting to outdistance each other reaching speeds over 80 mph.

The officer activated the emergency lights of his patrol unit attempting to stop the vehicles. The Mustang failed to stop for the officer and continued to travel. The Charger came to a stop, the driver was identified as Jose Carlos Saldivar Jr.; 25 years of age declined knowing the operator of the Mustang.

Saldivar was placed under arrest for Racing on Highway, his vehicle was towed away from the scene. Saldivar was transported to the police station for processing, he was later released to the custody of GEO Correctional Facility
