A Del Rio man has been charged with felony child endangerment after he allegedly spun “doughnuts” with his vehicle in the civic center parking lot, police said.

Abdon Davila Jr., 23, 205 Hodge St., was arrested about 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 9 and charged with the offense of abandoning or endangering a child, a state jail felony, according to an arrest report released recently by the Del Rio Police Department.

In an affidavit filed in the case, DRPD Officer Christopher Lauritzen reported he was dispatched to the Del Rio Civic Center, 1915 Veterans Blvd., at 12:17 a.m. on Oct. 9 after police received a call about “a reckless driver performing ‘doughnuts’ in the parking lot.”

“While approaching the scene, I observed a large plume of smoke in the civic center parking lot consistent with smoke emitting from tires (on a vehicle) performing doughnuts,” Lauritzen wrote.

He noted when he arrived in the civic center parking lot, a fellow DRPD officer, who was working off-duty at an event in the facility, told him he had seen a white Ford F-150 pickup perform the doughnuts in the parking lot, then leave the parking lot via an egress/ingress road on its south side near Avenue G and 17th Street.

“I observed the pickup leaving the parking lot and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle based on the information provided by (the off-duty officer). The pickup . . . was driven by a male identified as Abdon Davila. (The off-duty officer) soon arrived on scene and confirmed that the pickup was the vehicle that performed about six doughnuts in the parking lot while surrounded by other vehicles and pedestrians,” Lauritzen wrote.

Lauritzen wrote the pickup also carried several passengers, including Davila’s girlfriend and another woman, whom Davila identified to police as his brother’s girlfriend.

“I also observed a rear-facing car seat in the back right seat of the pickup, which was carrying a small infant. The infant was identified as (the brother’s girlfriend’s) daughter,” Lauritzen wrote.

Justice of the Peace Pct. 4 Hilda Castillo Lopez set a bond of $3,500 in the case.
