Skilled nurses were honored by the Del Rio City Council and Mayor Bruno “Ralphy” Lozano with two recent proclamations.
Lozano designated May 6 through May 12 as National Nurses Week 2022 and May 8 through May 14 as National Skilled Nursing Care Week in Del Rio. The proclamations were read and presented by Mayor Pro-Tem Jim DeReus during the city council’s May 10 meeting.
DeReus, noting several of his family members are nurses, read aloud the following proclamation:
“Whereas, National Nurses Week is celebrated each year between May 6, National Nurses Day, and May 12, the birthday of celebrated nurse Florence Nightingale, and whereas, National Nurses Week honors the contributions and sacrifices of nurses and serves as a reminder to thank the medical professionals who keep individuals and communities healthy; and
“Whereas, nurses are extraordinary individuals who display courage, care, dedication and commitment in caring for others and are rooted in strength to carry out these duties; and whereas, nurses work to promote wellness and help prevent disease and help reduce health risks at the population level through evidence-based care and education; and
“Whereas, it is more important than ever to celebrate nurses across all fields for their unwavering care and dedication for their patients and communities; and whereas, the American Nurses Association celebrates National Nurses Week 2022 and celebrates nurses with the slogan ‘Rooted in Strength;’ and
“Whereas, during this National Nurses Week celebration, Val Verde Nursing and Rehabilitation Center proudly joins to recognize and honor our nurses’ accomplishments and efforts during these times and show our appreciation to nurses worldwide not only this week but at every opportunity throughout the year, now, therefore, I, Bruno J. Lozano, as mayor of the city of Del Rio, do hereby proclaim May 6 through May 12, 2022, as National Nurses Week 2022.”
DeReus also read aloud a second proclamation, as follows:
“Whereas, the citizens of Del Rio place a great value upon the well-being of the senior population; and whereas, as human beings we have a natural yearning to connect, with studies linking people with strong social relationships to many aspects of positive health outcomes, especially among older adults; and
“Whereas, nursing home residents of any age or ability are themselves living history and are a precious resource; and whereas, we salute our citizens now residing in nursing facilities and recognize the immeasurable contributions they have made to our society as a truly respected generation that built Del Rio and its surrounding communities into thriving centers of life; and
“Whereas, we salute our staff who have provided a steadfast commitment to providing high-level care for the residents, and this has never been more evident than the last two years during the pandemic, when, in addition to protecting and caring for their residents around the clock during a time of limited visitation and social distancing, staff stepped up and served as family members and friends to ensure that residents had the essential social connections they needed; and
“Whereas, Val Verde Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and its staff will celebrate the essential role that skilled nursing care centers and their staffs play in ‘Creating and Nurturing Connections,’ this year’s theme for their residents, now, therefore, I, Bruno J. Lozano, as mayor of the city of Del Rio, do hereby proclaim May 8 through May 14, 2022, as National Skilled Nursing Care Week, a week to honor both our vulnerable citizens who receive care and the dedicated ones giving care in our community.”
DeReus and City Manager John Sheedy then presented the framed proclamations to Debra Doran, admissions director for Val Verde Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
