Mayor Bruno “Ralphy” Lozano has proclaimed March 2022 as “American Red Cross Month.”
The proclamation was read and presented to American Red Cross volunteer Candace Lee during the Feb. 22 meeting of the Del Rio City Council. Mayor Pro-tem Jim DeReus read the proclamation and made the presentation since Lozano attended the meeting via video link.
The proclamation reads as follows:
“Whereas, March is American Red Cross Month, a special time to recognize and thank volunteers, our everyday heroes, those who reach out to help their neighbors when they are in need; and whereas, the American Red Cross is on the front lines every day, even during the pandemic, they volunteer their time, enhanced skills, give blood or provide financial donations to help those in need. Ninety percent of the American Red Cross workforce are volunteers; and whereas, the American Red Cross has been dedicated to serving people in need since it was founded by Clara Barton over 140 years ago on May 21, 1881; and
“Whereas, around the world, across the country and here in the south Texas region, the American Red Cross responds to hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, wildfires and home fires; and whereas, last February, when Texas was hit with the devastating and deadly winter blast resulting in widespread electrical outages, the American Red Cross supported lifesaving warming centers set up by governmental agencies and community partners with supplies and logistical assistance such as 3,356 cots, 465 blankets, 300 comfort kits, 2,000 shelf-stable meals, 45 pallets of water and 500 cleanup kits; and
“Whereas, we dedicate the month of March to all those who support the American Red Cross mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies. Our community depends on the American Red Cross, which relies on donations of time, money and blood to fulfill its humanitarian mission, now, therefore, I, Bruno J. Lozano, mayor of the city of Del Rio, Texas, hereby proclaim the month of March 2022 as American Red Cross month in the city of Del Rio, Texas, and in honor of this we encourage all citizens to support this organization and its noble humanitarian mission.”
“Thank you for everything you do,” DeReus said as he presented the certificate to Lee
After the presentation, Lee said, “We like money, yes, but we’d much rather you donate your time. Get on redcross.org and donate some of your time. It’s not that difficult. I’m an old crippled lady, and I’m still doing it.”
