A Kingwood, Texas, man stationed here with the Texas National Guard was arrested Friday after he reportedly held another man at gunpoint in a local bar, police said.
Mateo Muñoz Wilburn, 25, was arrested and charged with the offenses of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony; of unlawfully carrying a weapon, a third-degree felony; of unlawful restraint, a third-degree felony; and of deadly conduct, a Class A misdemeanor, Del Rio Police Department Cpl. Dulce Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said DRPD Officer Joseph Toro was dispatched to the White Horse Lounge in the Ramada Inn of Del Rio, 2101 Veterans Blvd., at 1:36 a.m. on Friday after police were called about a man brandishing a firearm inside the bar.
“Upon his arrival, Officer Toro was informed by a bystander that the male subject, later identified as Wilburn, had pointed a firearm at another male subject. Officer Toro reported he observed several subjects at the outdoor venue screaming and acting erratically. On closer observation, he realized one of the male subjects had another male at gunpoint,” Gonzalez said.
Toro reported he unholstered his duty weapon and began ordering Wilburn to drop his gun and raise his hands.
“After several commands, the male subject complied and placed his gun on a nearby table. The subject was then ordered to walk back toward the officer and was safely taken into custody,” Gonzalez said.
Toro said the man appeared to be intoxicated and failed to provide identifying information to him.
“Wilburn was later identified by a supervisor,” Gonzalez said.
“So far, what we know is that Wilburn and the other man were involved in a verbal altercation inside the bar. Then the suspect allegedly exited the bar and retrieved the weapon, a handgun, from his vehicle,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez confirmed Wilburn was in Del Rio as part of the National Guard contingent stationed here to help deal with the ongoing immigrant situation.
