A once-deported Nicaraguan national who slipped back into the United States was captured after leading law enforcement officers on a 30-minute chase Monday morning.
Jose Ramero-Ramirez got a local state trooper’s attention when he blew through a stop sign south of Del Rio early Monday morning. “That’s when he put his lights on and began chase,” said Nathan Brandley, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson.
The chase led state troopers, Val Verde County Sheriff’s office deputies and Border Patrol agents around Loop 79 and then headed towards the lake on Hwy. 277.
Ramero-Ramirez, who was in a stolen Dodge Ram 150, decided he couldn’t outrun the string of law enforcement officers behind him, so he stopped on the Hwy. 277 bridge and jumped over the edge to swim for his daring escape. Except he missed the water and landed on land, where he ended up with numerous non-life threatening injuries. Law enforcement officials estimated the drop was 80 to a 100 feet.
Despite broken ribs and a sprained ankle, Ramero-Ramirez still ran for it and went for a swim in Lake Amistad before he was brought into custody.
When law enforcement officers searched the stolen vehicle they also found stolen guns and 8 undocumented people that were taken into custody along with Ramero-Ramirez by Border Patrol.
