A utility pole was sheared off and several persons were treated for injuries following a collision between a pickup and a sports car at the intersection of North Main and West Third Streets today.
Nancy Terrones, who lives in the home next to the vacant lot in the 400 block of North Main Street where the utility pole was sited, said she heard the crash about 3:40 p.m. today.
“I was watching ‘Monsters’ on Netflix when I heard this big boom. Then I ran outside,” Terrones told The 830 Times at the scene.
The “big boom” was a Ford F250 four-door pickup slamming into the metal fence around Terrones’ property after it struck the utility pole, shearing it off at ground level.
The driver of the truck, a young woman, was being treated by emergency medical services personnel from Val Verde Regional Medical Center and appeared to have no life-threatening injuries.
Workers with the city’s parks and recreation department, who
were clearing weeds from the North Main Street median, were even closer to the collision.
One worker, Isaac Prieto, said the incident occurred when the truck collided with a maroon Chevrolet Camaro at the intersection of North Main and West Third.
Prieto said the truck then careened straight for the workers until the driver turned the wheel sharply, and the truck veered across the road, over the curb and sidewalk, slammed into the utility pole and came to rest against the metal fence around Terrones’ home.
Prieto said one of the workers was struck by a wire hanging from the pole and was transported to the hospital.
Del Rio police and firefighters also responded, and the accident is under investigation by the police department.
