Police investigators are asking for tips from the public in Saturday’s fatal shooting of an Amarillo man in south Del Rio.

Del Rio Police Department Chief Daniel Busken on Tuesday asked members of the public with any information about the shooting to call the police department’s anonymous tip line at (830) 774-8590.

Busken said police officers were called to the scene of the shooting in the 900 block of Waters Avenue at 8:20 p.m. Saturday. He said when officers arrived, they found Adrian Cortez, 28, lying shot in the street outside the residence.

“The officers immediately rendered medical assistance and called for an ambulance, and Mr. Cortez was transported to the emergency room at Val Verde Regional Medical Center,” Busken told the 830 Times on Tuesday.

Busken said Cortez appeared to have been shot once in the torso, and Cortez died of the injury at the hospital at 9:35 p.m. Saturday.

Busken said Cortez is a resident of Amarillo, Texas, but he is known to have relatives in Del Rio and across the border in Mexico. The chief said Cortez was believed to have been staying at the house on Waters Avenue while in Del Rio.

Busken said Cortez’s body was transported to the office of the Webb County Medical Examiner in Laredo where an autopsy to formally determine the cause and manner of death will be conducted.

The chief said police investigators believe the shooting “is an isolated incident,” and there is no danger to the public.

Busken said as of Tuesday night, no one has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

“Our investigation into this incident is ongoing,” the chief said.
