Del Rio Police Department officers are investigating the death of an individual who fell from the Dr. Fermin Calderon Boulevard/U.S. Highway 277 overpass Sunday night.

When the 830 Times contacted City Communications and Marketing Director Anita Mariner for information about the incident shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, Mariner sent the following text message: “According to Del Rio Police Department Chief Frank Ramirez, an individual jumped from the overpass bridge on Dr. Fermin Calderon Boulevard.”

“The individual did die and has not been identified,” she added.

Police department vehicles blocked East Ogden Street from its intersection with South Bedell Avenue west to the overpass as the investigation was being conducted. A Del Rio Fire Department engine was also observed at the scene.

Mariner said no further information about the incident was available, but noted she will share more information as it becomes available.

Police typically do not release information about a deceased person until next of kin have been notified.
