The Del Rio Queens did not slay the giant Tuesday night, but they went toe-to-toe with one of District 30-6A’s two remaining unbeaten teams.
The Alexander Lady Bulldogs defeated Del Rio in three sets, 25-14, 25-18 and 25-15, but the Queens continued battling throughout the match. The victory was Alexander’s 15th in its past 16 matches.
“Our defense kept us in the game,” Queens head coach Angelica Rivera said. “I just couldn’t be more proud of our girls because they never gave up and fought all the way.”
Even in the third and final set, the Queens made it clear they would not go quietly. Del Rio built an 8-6 lead before Alexander regained control and pulled away for the victory.
The schedule does not get any easier for Del Rio. District co-leader United will stampede into town to face the Queens at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
The loss dropped Del Rio to 1-4 in district play and 12-9 overall.
