Small business owner Randy Quiñones was sworn in Tuesday as the newest member of the Del Rio City Council.
Quiñones will represent District III on the city council after winning
election to the seat by defeating the incumbent, Alexandra Falcon Calderon, in the May 4 General Election.
City Secretary Mari Acosta administered the statement of officer and the oath of office to Quiñones, who stood in the center of council chambers with his wife Victoria Quiñones at his side.
After taking the oaths and signing the requisite paperwork, Quiñones took his seat on the council dais, next to Councilman Jim DeReus, who shook Quiñones’ hand in welcome.
After Quiñones took his seat, Mayor Al Arreola asked if there were any statements from the council.
“I look forward to working with you,” DeReus said.
“Thank you; likewise,”Quiñones replied.
Mayor Pro-tem Steve Webb said, “I would just like to congratulate Randy on his win. You’re in for a big surprise. You’re in for a ride that you probably never thought you’d be taking. The council is proud to have you, bringing new ideas, new thoughts. I’m only here for a couple more meetings, but I’ll be around. Congratulations.”
Councilman Jesus Lopez Jr., too, congratulated Quiñones on his victory in the election.
“Hopefully, we can all work together. As we’ve said, we don’t agree with each other all the time, but to the best of your ability, make the right decisions and make decisions the best for the city and the citizens, so welcome aboard, sir.”
Councilwoman Ernestina “Tina” Martinez said, “Welcome. This is your first term, and I hope you follow my steps. I’m into my third term, and I don’t know if I’ll do another one, but I’m here. Welcome, and anything we can do for you, just let us know. God bless you.”
Councilman J.P. Sanchez said, “Congratulations, Randy, and as the newest member and the youngest member of this council, I welcome your new ideas. Take us forward.”
Arreola then invited Quiñones to speak.
“Thank you all, and let’s get to work,” Quiñones said.
Arreola also invited Interim City Manager Manuel Chavez to comment.
Chavez said, “Thank you. Once again, congratulations, Councilman Quinõnes. I look forward to working with you, and as we discussed before, whatever you need from myself and city staff, we’re here to help.”
After the special meeting, a short reception featuring cake and refreshments was held in the hallway outside council chambers.
At 6:30 p.m., Quiñones participated in his first regular meeting.
