Members of the local public school board were presented with updates on the middle school
reconfiguration process for the 2025-2026 school year at Monday’s school board meeting.
Sandra Hernandez, chief administrative officer for the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated
Independent School District, gave a presentation on the planned reconfiguration of three new
middle school campuses. The project involves creating three new middle school campuses at
the San Felipe Middle School campus, the Garfield Elementary School campus and the Del Rio
Middle School campus.
Hernandez gave information on the notification process for the students and parents being
affected in the process. She first talked about the notifications for the parents of students who
will be rezoned from the Garfield Elementary and Del Rio Middle School campuses.
“Since then, we have sent out letters. All the letters have been received by parents,” Hernandez
said.
Hernandez then mentioned that staff at the New Tech Academy, which is located on the San
Felipe Memorial Middle School campus, has sent out its acceptance letters to all the middle
school students, which occurred during the week of March 10.
She also mentioned the Garfield
rezoning letters were also delivered to inform students of which schools they will be attending
during the 2025 fall semester.
Next in the presentation, Hernandez mentioned how the school locator had been updated on
the school district’s website. Parents can go on the website and search for their current home
address and school locations. Hernandez demonstrated the locator by typing in her childhood
address to show where it was located.
The middle school staffing process has also been completed, and staff members have received
notifications of their assignments.
The presentation ended with an update of the last citizens’ committee meeting held March 12,
which took parents and teachers on a tour of the Buena Vista Elementary School campus, the
San Felipe Memorial Middle School campus and the Del Rio Freshman School campus at the
Del Rio High School.
After the presentation had concluded, the board members asked questions. Diego M. Almaraz
Jr., board member, asked what campuses the Garfield staff will be reassigned. Dr. Carlos
Rios, school district superintendent, said the plan is for teachers to be sent to where Garfield
Elementary students are being rezoned.
Joshua Overfelt, vice president of the school board, asked a question about how teachers are
going to be helped with moving equipment and teaching materials when they are relocated.
Rios said the district will help by providing boxes and methods for their supplies to be
transported and offering eight hours of extra duty pay for when staff are setting up their rooms.
