Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez has confirmed his office is investigating the murder of a man found shot to death this morning at an intersection of two roads in the Lake Ridge area in the county north of Del Rio.
Martinez said he was notified of the death about 2 a.m. today after Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called about a dead man lying in the roadway at the intersection of Las Brisas Boulevard and Sundance Kid Trail about four miles west of U.S. Highway 90.
“We’re investigating a homicide. We are waiting for a positive identification on the deceased individual,” Martinez told the 830 Times in an interview at his office Monday morning.
Martinez said Border Patrol agents discovered the man who appeared to have been shot multiple times.
The intersection of Las Brisas Boulevard and Sundance Kid Trail is in a sparsely-populated part of the Lake Ridge area, with no houses in the immediate vicinity. The two roads intersect in a brush-covered, rocky landscape.
Late this morning, the intersection was still marked by small puddles and spatters of blood along a line about seven yards long and ending in a larger pool of blood about a foot in diameter.
Martinez said Justice of the Peace Pct. 4 Hilda Lopez was notified and pronounced the man dead at the scene.
“They’re now in the process of taking the individual to the medical examiner’s office in Laredo for an autopsy,” Martinez said.
“We are still investigating, and we have a couple of leads that we’re following,” the sheriff added.
He said anyone with information about the shooting death is asked to call the sheriff’s office’s criminal investigations division at 830-774-7513.
