NEWS — Six candidates file for March 2022 Republican Party Primary Election

Filing ended Monday for candidates seeking a place on the ballot for the March 2022 Republican Party Primary Election in Val Verde County.

Val Verde County Republican Party Chair Frank Lopez and other local Republican Party leaders met at Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q restaurant for about an hour before the 6 p.m. filing deadline to receive last-minute applications.

A total of five Republican candidates have filed for county offices, and one has filed for re-election to a state district judgeship.

83rd Judicial District Judge Robert E. Cadena has filed for re-election to the position he currently holds. Cadena filed his application with the state Republican Party on Nov. 16.

The five other local Republican candidates submitted their applications to Lopez.

One of the five, Justice of the Peace Pct. 3 Pat Cole, is also an incumbent seeking re-election to the position she currently holds.

The remaining four Republican candidates are Fabiola Aguilera, Arturo Rodriguez, Esther Chapoy and Jimmy McDonald.

Rodriguez, currently a licensed Realtor, is a retired federal law enforcement officer. He is seeking the Republican Party nomination for the position of county judge. If Rodriguez wins the nomination in the March primary, he will face the incumbent, Lewis G. Owens Jr., a Democrat, in the November General Election.

Aguilera is a student at Western Governor’s University and formerly worked in the district clerk’s office. She is seeking the Republican Party nomination for the position of district clerk. If Aguilera wins the nomination in the March primary, she will face the incumbent, Jo Ann Cervantes, a Democrat, in the November General Election.

Chapoy is a retired Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent. She is seeking the Republican Party nomination for the position of county clerk. If Chapoy wins the nomination in the March primary, she will face the incumbent, Generosa “Janie” Ramon, a Democrat, in the November General Election.

McDonald is a retired firefighter who formerly worked at Laughlin Air Force Base. He is seeking the Republican Party nomination for the position of Precinct 2 county commissioner. If McDonald wins the nomination in the March primary, he will face the winner of the Democratic Party Primary Election in the November General Election. Juan Carlos Vazquez is the incumbent in the position.

The Republican Party Primary Election is currently set for March 1, 2022.
