County and city officials want to remind area residents that setting off fireworks is banned inside the city and that this year some types of fireworks are banned in the county, as well.

City officials on Monday posted a notice reminding city residents “there is a city ordinance that prohibits the discharging of fireworks within the city limits.”

County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. said Friday there is a county-wide burn ban in effect and noted county commissioners court in early June passed an order banning the sale and use of fireworks described as “skyrockets with sticks or missiles with fins.”

The order banning the sale and use of these two types of fireworks noted that commissioners court “determined that the normal danger of fire in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde County is greatly enhanced by the extremely dry conditions now existing.”

But Owens said he knows that people will probably set off fireworks anyway, adding that he and the county fire department are preparing for fires.

“We do have a burn ban in place because of the extremely dry conditions in the county right now, but we are preparing for fires. We always get them this time of year,” Owens said.

“We don’t want to keep people from having fun, but we’re asking that anyone that pops permitted fireworks to be careful and pay attention to their surroundings. Stay away from areas that have high grass, for instance, and look for an area that is clear and clean of brush,” the county judge added.
