A suspect in the Oct. 2 murder of a 21-year-old Del Rio man has been identified and jailed, Val Verde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez said today.
“A suspect in the killing of Joey Burgi has been identified. The suspect is currently in jail in another county, and a hold has been placed on him for the charge of murder,” Martinez said in a telephone interview.
Martinez declined to identify the suspect.
The sheriff said the investigation into the murder of Burgi, a resident of Del Rio, remains ongoing.
Burgi was found shot to death in the early morning hours of Oct. 2.
His body was discovered lying in the roadway at the intersection of Las Brisas Boulevard and Sundance Kid Trail in the Sundance Estates area of the county north of Del Rio. The sheriff said he was notified of the death about 2 a.m. on the morning of Oct. 2.
Justice of the Peace Pct. 4 Hilda Lopez was notified, and she pronounced Burgi dead at the scene.
Lopez ordered an autopsy, and the body was transported to the Webb County Medical Examiner’s Office in Laredo. The medical examiner’s office confirmed the cause of death as gunshot wounds, Martinez said last week.
The day after Burgi’s body was discovered, Martinez announced a person of interest had been detained in the case, noting the person of interest was arrested on felony warrants for drug possession and failure to appear that had been issued out of Uvalde County.
At the time, Martinez declined to discuss the relationship, if any, between Burgi and the person of interest who had been detained.
Martinez at the time also said investigators working on the murder case believe “all of the events unfolded there at the intersection.”
