Students and staff at three local public schools were placed on alert this morning after a report of shots fired on the south side of Del Rio.
According to a press release from the city of Del Rio, shortly after 8 a.m., Del Rio Police Officers were called to the area of South San Felipe near Riojas Street as well as on Virginia Street for several groups of illegal immigrants. It was reported that at the same time, gunshots were said to have been fired in the same vicinity.
As a precaution, Ruben Chavira Elementary, San Felipe Memorial Middle School and Lamar Elementary were placed on “lock in” by the San Felipe Del Rio CISD.
According to information provide by the district, the “lock in” order is a shelter in place order, meaning that students and staff should find a safe location indoors and remain there until given an “all clear” message or instructed to evacuate.
“Further investigation revealed that a resident may have fired gun shots to scare off the immigrants, which caused immediate alarm,” the press release stated, which added that officers were investigating a residence near Leticia and Riojas streets as the source of the gun shots.
No other shots had been reported. The “lock-in” order has since been lifted by the school district.
The release also said that the Texas Department of Public Safety was assisting officers with a helicopter to search for the groups that ran away after the shots were fired.
No other information was made available, but updates should be made as the investigation continues.
