NEWS — Traffic stop leads to arrest for DWI—third or more offense and resisting arrest

Press release from the Del Rio Police Department

On Oct. 18, 2026, at approximately 1:03 a.m., a Del Rio Police Department officer conducted a traffic stop in the 2000 block of Veterans Boulevard.

Upon contacting the driver, the officer noticed a strong odor of mint on his breath, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. Based on these observations, the officer requested that the driver participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.

The driver initially agreed and exited the vehicle. However, after the officer demonstrated the tests, the driver became upset and refused to complete them. Based on the observed signs of intoxication, the officer placed him under arrest for driving while intoxicated.

During the arrest, the driver pulled away and physically resisted. The officer gained control of him and secured him in custody.

The driver, identified as Miguel Junior Maldonado, 39, was transported to the police station for processing. A subsequent records check revealed previous DWI convictions. Officers obtained a search warrant, and a blood specimen was collected.

Maldonado was charged with driving while intoxicated—third or more offense and resisting arrest, search or transportation. He was transferred to the custody of the GEO Correctional Facility pending magistration.

All individuals are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
