NEWS — Traffic stop leads to DWI, invalid license arrest

Press release from the Del Rio Police Department

An 18-year-old man was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated and driving with an invalid license following an early-morning traffic stop Sunday, Aug. 16.

At approximately 3:09 a.m., Del Rio Police Department officers responded to the 2200 block of Bedell Avenue after receiving a report of a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed without its headlights activated.

Officers spotted the vehicle from a distance and attempted to make contact with it but subsequently lost sight of it.

Approximately one hour later, officers saw the vehicle traveling north on Veterans Boulevard near Agarita Drive. They conducted a traffic stop after observing that the vehicle had an expired registration sticker.

The driver was identified as Julio Roberto Sanchez Jr. A driver’s license inquiry showed his driving privileges were invalid because of a suspension.

Sanchez was arrested and transported to the Del Rio Police Department for booking and processing.

At the police station, an officer reportedly observed signs of intoxication and detected a strong odor of alcohol on Sanchez’s breath and person. Police said Sanchez refused to perform standardized field sobriety tests or provide a breath or blood specimen.

Officers obtained a search warrant authorizing the collection of a blood sample. Sanchez was transported to Val Verde Regional Medical Center, where the sample was collected and submitted as evidence.

Sanchez was charged with driving while intoxicated and driving while license invalid.
