The source of a loud ‘boom’ heard across Del Rio and into parts of the county Tuesday remains a mystery.
Val Verde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez said he personally received “dozens” of calls shortly after the loud sound echoed across north Del Rio about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
“At this point, we’re still trying to figure out the source of the loud noise people heard,” Martinez told the 830 Times this morning.
Martinez said he contacted a number of possible “culprits,” including operators of the “Kelley Pit,” a rock quarry located several
miles north of Del Rio on U.S. Highway 277.
Martinez said he also contacted the company working on a portion of the border fence along the Rio Grande in far south Val Verde County and a company installing high-line electrical lines. He said both companies said they weren’t the source of the noise.
“I also spoke with officials at Laughlin Air Force Base, but they didn’t have anything,” the sheriff said.
A sampling of area residents was asked by the 830 Times about the noise. Most who were on the city’s north side Tuesday afternoon said they had heard the sound, but were unable to say with any certainty from which direction it had come.
Residents who were in central and south Del Rio on Tuesday afternoon mostly said they did not hear anything.
Martinez said he will keep asking questions.
