The bodies of two kayakers from Mexico have been recovered after they drowned in the Rio Grande this morning, Val Verde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez has confirmed.

Martinez said the bodies of a 17-year-old male and an older man who reportedly worked as an engineer for the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) were recovered from the Rio Grande some distance below Amistad Dam.

Martinez told The 830 Times he was notified of the drownings about 11 a.m. today and said the two were part of a group of 10 to 15 kayakers from Ciudad Acuna, Coah., Mexico.

The sheriff said the body of the 17-year-old was recovered on the Mexico side of the river, and the body of the IBWC engineer was recovered by Border Patrol agents on the U.S. side.

“Attempts were made to perform CPR, but to no avail,” Martinez said.

He noted the incident remains under investigation.
