Two persons are in police custody following a shooting outside a south Del Rio convenience store Sunday morning.

The victim of the shooting, a man whose name has not been released by the Del Rio Police Department, was taken by ambulance to Val Verde Regional Medical Center and has been transferred by medical helicopter to University Hospital in San Antonio, DRPD Chief Frank Ramirez told the 830 Times in a telephone interview Sunday afternoon.

Police were dispatched to the Minits #115 convenience store, 620 Las Vacas St., at 11:41 a.m. Sunday after police received a call about a “fight in progress” there.

“Apparently the department received a call about some type of domestic violence incident,” Ramirez said.

After the shooting, two persons attempted to flee the scene, driving southeast on West Nicholson Street.

An officer at the scene said the two were intercepted by police officers about a block from the convenience store and taken into custody.

Ramirez confirmed two persons were taken into police custody following the shooting, but said no further details were available.

As police officers completed their investigation at the scene of the shooting about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Minits Manager Claudia Ramirez spoke to The 830 Times about the incident.

“There was an altercation between the person that got shot and some lady,” Ramirez said.

She said the altercation began as a verbal exchange that quickly moved outside the store.

“The shooting happened right outside, as soon as that man came outside, they tried to run him over with the car, and he barely got out of the way, but then the guy from the car got out and shot him,” she said.

Ramirez said no one inside the store was injured.

Ramirez, who has been the manager at the store for four years, said she was shaken by the incident, but added that although there have been other incidents at the store during her time there, “this is the most extreme.”

Ramirez said store employees called 9-1-1, and then notified her.
