One of three women accused of murder in the stabbing death of another woman here in June has been released from jail after posting bonds totaling $2 million.
Amaya Cookie Diaz, 19, was released from custody on Tuesday, Oct. 6, according to information released by the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office at the request of The 830 Times.
The information received from the sheriff’s office also noted Diaz posted bonds totaling $2 million – $1 million on the murder charge, and $1 million on the charge of tampering/fabricating evidence with intent to impair.
Diaz, her sister Kitty Marie Diaz, 21, and a third woman, Kyandra Renee Faz, 22, were arrested by Del Rio Police Department officers on June 25. All three women have been charged with murder, a first-degree felony, in the stabbing death of Del Rioan Caroline Pena, 32.
According to a DRPD report on file about the incident, officers were dispatched to the emergency room at Val Verde Regional Medical Center shortly after 2 p.m. on June 25 after receiving a report that a woman, later identified as Pena, was receiving treatment after she had been stabbed. Witnesses told the responding officers the stabbing had taken place outside a residence in the 800 block of East 10th Street.
When officers went to the East Tenth Street address, they spoke to Faz, who told them Pena had come to her residence “to start a fight.” Faz said two of her friends, Amaya Diaz and Kitty Diaz, drove up a short time later, and all four women became involved in an altercation. Pena was stabbed during that altercation.
Medical personnel treated Pena here, then transferred her to a hospital in San Antonio later the same day. Pena died of her wounds there.
The Diaz sisters and Faz have been in jail since June 25.
Attorneys for Kitty Marie Diaz and Kyandra Renee Faz have sought court hearings seeking reductions in bond for their clients. Kitty Diaz’s bond was reduced to $2 million from $5 million, and Faz’s bond was increased, from $5 million to $5,200,000, after she, too, was charged with tampering with evidence.
The sheriff’s office confirmed Wednesday, Oct. 8, that Kitty Marie Diaz and Kyandra Renee Faz remain in custody.
