Aurelio Hinojosa Ramirez, Jr., age 92, passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas at his home. Aurelio was the first child born to Florinda Hinojosa and Aurelio Ramirez, Sr. on October 5, 1931, in Del Rio, Texas.
He met his wife Maria (“Concha”) at a dance in San Angelo while she was attending Shannon Nursing School at San Angelo Junior College. They married on November 14, 1954, and enjoyed a wonderful life together during their 64 years of marriage. His journalism career had them traveling from El Paso to San Angelo to Laredo before finally settling down in San Antonio in 1963. While there, he worked as a sportswriter at the San Antonio Express News for the remainder of his career. Those who worked with and knew him held him in very high esteem.
In addition to being a highly respected sportswriter, Aurelio dedicated many years as an Official Scorer for many sports at several schools. In January of 2022, he was recognized for having dedicated over 50 years of his life as the Official Scorer at St. Mary’s University. A fellow colleague shared: Aurelio is fondly remembered by many basketball officials “as a strong and comforting presence courtside, always considering himself as an extension of the officiating crew. His legacy and impact on the basketball community are profound, and his contributions to and influence on basketball officiating are irreplaceable.”
Aurelio enjoyed golf with friends and family, was an avid bowler and, like his wife, enjoyed having small poker games and traveling to casinos when they could. He cared deeply for his family and cherished the time they spent together. All his children, his grandchildren, his great-grandchildren and his extended family knew and felt his tremendous love for them. He also highly valued education for his family. It was of the utmost importance that all his children and grandchildren graduate from college. Mission accomplished; all have degrees!
Aurelio will be sorely missed for his integrity, intelligence, kindness and humility. He will be remembered by his family as a tireless, selfless, loving husband, father and mentor. We know Aurelio is smiling down on us and watching all the sports he can uninterrupted in Heaven!
Aurelio is survived by his four children and their spouses, Ana Linda Ramirez (Renee Block), Maria Antonieta “Toni” Moreno (Gilbert Moreno), Aurelio Lopez Ramirez, III (Sara Ramirez), and Rebeca Raquel Garcia (Rafael Garcia, Jr.). He will also be remembered by his eight grandchildren Gabriel Moreno, Catherine Domingo (Raymond Domingo), Rafael Garcia, III, Amelia Ramirez (Nick Norton, partner), Alejandra Ramirez (Maddy Thompson), Amelia Garcia, Carlos Garcia, and Isabel Garcia and his great-grandchildren Andrew Domingo, Nate Domingo, and Caroline Norton-Ramirez. He is also survived by his step-grandchild Richard Krause (Lily Krause) and four step great-grandchildren Brenson Krause, Tenley Krause, Adley Krause, and Remy Krause. He is also survived by his brother Alberto Ramirez (Diane Ramirez) and his sister Alicia Hernandez along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Prayers for the eternal rest of Aurelio’s soul in his Heavenly home are most appreciated.
At the funeral, we hope to see you in burnt orange for the Longhorns, cowboy blue for the Cowboys, or silver for the Spurs in honor of Aurelio’s favorite sports teams.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Sunday, August 25, 2024, at Porter Loring Mortuary.
