OBITUARY — Freddie Rowland McDonald

Freddie Rowland McDonald, 79, of Del Rio, Texas passed away in San Antonio, Texas on January 13, 2022. Freddie was born in Del Rio, Texas on June 7, 1942 to Edna Pearl and JB McDonald.
Freddie was a true troubadour. He had a passion and love for music his whole life. His older brothers, Kenneth and Gerald (Boogie) taught him how to play the guitar at an early age. In the late 1960s Freddie started the band Freddie and the Vaqueros. The band toured all over Texas into the 1980s. During this time, he wrote and recorded many songs. He created his own record label, B & J Productions. In 1969, Freddie started his own electrical contracting business, Mac’s Electric. In addition to running his electrical business, he taught electrical trade classes at Del Rio High School from 1988-1999. Many of his students went on to become Electricians. He then transferred to become the Director of Transportation for San Felipe Del Rio C.I.S.D. During his tenure, he helped develop and instruct classes to teach and certify his staff to achieve their bus driver certification. He served in this position until 2004. After retirement, he found great enjoyment working for KWMC radio where he would co-host Town Talk Live, as well as perform live remote broadcasts from different locations in Del Rio.
Freddie McDonald is survived by his children John McDonald and wife Marcie, New Braunfels, TX, David Lee McDonald and wife Elizabeth, Del Rio TX, Dora Leyva and husband Luis, Del Rio TX, step-sons, George Gray and wife Lisa Marie, Waco, TX, Robert Jarwin and wife Cynthia, Del Rio, TX, Jim Jarwin and wife Leslie, Tuttle, OK, Joe Jarwin and wife Christina, Montgomery, TX and numerous grandchildren and great grand-children. He was preceded in death by his parents Edna Pearl Cross and JB McDonald, brothers Gerald “Boogie” McDonald, Kenneth McDonald, and son Michael McDonald.
Graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Del Rio on Friday, Feb 04, 2022, at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Val Verde County Community Center Food Bank Program.
