City of Del Rio Police Department press release
On October 20th, 2024 at approximately 6:21p.m. the Del Rio Police Department responded to the 800 block of East Gutierrez Street for a 911 call regarding shots fired.
Upon arrival police observed a male victim; 27 yrs. of age
with multiple gunshot injuries to the upper torso and the lower leg area. Emergency Medical Services arrived and transported the male victim to Val Verde Regional Medical Center for treatment. The victim was later air lifted to San Antonio, Tx for further treatment.
Criminal Investigation Division arrived at the scene and spoke to witnesses. Police discovered video footage that depicted the male victim standing in the street. The video depicted a maroon color challenger vehicle stop; two males are seen exiting the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle is then seen discharging a firearm five times at the direction of the victim. Both subjects are seen departing the area at a high rate of speed.
Police received information identifying a possible suspect. Police verified such information with the computerized information system. Police obtained an arrest warrant for a suspect identified as Damian Chavez; 21 yrs. of age. Police also obtained a search warrant for Chavez’s residence searching for the firearm and vehicle utilized in the incident.
Both warrants were successfully executed at Chavez’s residence located at the 200 block of Dennis Dr. Chavez was arrested and charged with the offense of Attempted Murder. Police recovered the suspect’s vehicle and the weapon for further processing.
