Queens powerlifting season ends

The Del Rio girl’s powerlifting team put their best lift forward among the best in the state at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association State Championships on March 15 at the Comerica Center located in Frisco, Texas.

Padilla in the 123-pound class, Betsally Garcia in the 148-pound class, Kailyn Lomas in the 114-pound class and Mia Hernández in the 97-pound class.

Del Rio head powerlifting coach David Gomez Jr. is excited for the future of the program as he returns four of the state qualifying lifters next season. He is vying to utilize this year’s success as a springboard and foundation for next year. 

“It’s exciting to see how much these girls have grown throughout the season,” Gomez Jr. said. “They earned the chance to compete with the best in the state and showed they can hang. With four of them coming back next season, the future looks bright.” 

 The highest finish recorded by the Queens was Mia Hernández with a 6th place finish in the 97-pound class. Hernández lifted incredible amounts of iron that exceeded her weight. She started off with 225 pounds in squats before moving over to the bench press where she finished with 105 pounds. On the deadlift Hernández had 230 pounds and finished with a grand total of 560 pounds. 

Gacia placed 9th overall as lifted 315 pounds in squat, 170 pounds in bench press and 355 pounds in deadlift to finish with 840 pounds. 

Lomas finished in 12th place in the 114-pound class division. She lifted 270 pounds in squats, 130 pounds in bench press and 245 pounds in deadlift to finish with a total of 645 pounds. 

Padilla took 14th place overall. She lifted 300 pounds in squats, 135 pounds in bench press and 285 pounds in deadlift to reach 720 pounds in the competition.  

Coronado battled in the 220-pound division and finished in 17th place. She opened with 385 pounds in squats then had 195 pounds in bench press before finishing with 325 pounds in deadlift. Coronado accumulated 905 pounds in the competition.
