A dominant performance brought the District 30-6A Boys Track and Field championship back to Del Rio.

Del Rio’s male athletes earned points in all but three events to outdistance Laredo Alexander to earn the team championship at this weekend’s district track and field meet held in Laredo.

Helping pave the way was Del Rio High’s record-breaking 4 x 200 meter relay team. The team of Jovahn West, Zane Hughes, Juan Peralta and Zack Taylor ran away with the district championship in the event in a time of 1:29.718. The team broke the Del Rio High record in the event at the San Angelo Relays in March when they ran a 1:27.93, eclipsing the mark of 1:30.08 set in 2007. And while they didn’t best their record-breaking time at district, they still won the district title by nearly two seconds over Laredo Nixon (1:31.304).

In all Del Rio’s athletes brought back six district championships in the 15 track and field events.

Taylor added to his district championship haul by winning the 200 meters in 22.603. He was also a part of the district champion 4 x 400 relay team along with Jairo Venegas, Luis Galaviz and Nathan Reyes. They took first in a time of 3:28.441.

Reyes and Venegas were dual district champions as well. Reyes won the 400 meters in 50.384 seconds, and Venegas claimed the high jump title by clearing 6 feet, 2 inches.
