Due to COVID restrictions, this event was canceled after Tuesday nights City Council meeting. City Council voted to limit meetings to 10 people or fewer.
Two Republican candidates for Texas’s 23rd Congressional seat will square off here June 25 in a debate sponsored by the Val Verde County Republican Party.
Raul Reyes, a Del Rio native and retired Air Force lieutenant colonel will debate Tony Gonzales, a retired Navy master chief petty officer will debate the issues facing the district and nation.
The local Republicans will have a “Meet the Candidates” at 6:30 p.m. and will transition into the debate at 7 p.m. June 25 at the -Ramada Inn.
Fernando Garcia, Val Verde County Chairman, said each candidate will get two minutes, after drawing for who goes first. “The first candidate has two minutes to answer then the opponent has two minutes to respond. Then, the first candidate will have one a minute rebuttal,” Garcia said. He added that the candidates will alternate going first and then each will get a two minute closing statement.
“The actual debate should take about an hour and a half,” he said.
The two were top finishers in the March 3 election, finishing ahead of 7 other candidates.
The winner of the July 14 runoff election will face Democrat Gina Ortiz Jones, Libertarian Beto Villela and Independent Steven Sanders who are all battling for the seat now held by retiring Republican Will Hurd.
