A second international bridge is “critical” for the city’s continued economic growth, one Del Rio resident told city council members.

Midiam Flores, who identified herself as “a lifelong citizen of Del Rio,” spoke to city council members during their meeting on Tuesday.

Flores told the council, “I’ve lived here for 61 years, and I’ve seen a lot of progress and a lot of change, and change is very difficult for us to all accept. I’ve worked in the manufacturing industry for 38 years. That manufacturing industry, whether many of you realize it or not, contributes to the economy of our Del Rio city. I would not be here today if it weren’t for all the benefits I have gotten from the manufacturing industry that we partner with.

“The importance of this (planned second international) bridge can’t be overstated, knowing that traveling from north on the new Ports-to-Plains routes, our city of Del Rio is the first international crossing point into our sister city of Ciudad Acuña and our neighboring country of Mexico. It promises to be a critical link that connects us with border markets and fosters economic growth.

“With this bridge we are not merely building a structure, we are laying the foundation for new business and opportunities, increased trade and enhanced connectivity. I believe that Del Rio wants to continue to progress and progress is built into their strategy. Progress always comes at some level of sacrifice,” she said.

Flores concentrated on the positive effects she said a new bridge will have on Del Rio’s economy.

“Imagine our local businesses reaching new customers across borders, our industries accessing global markets with ease and our entrepreneurs finding inspiration and collaboration beyond their immediate surroundings. The (planned) bridge will serve as a magnet for new investments, attract new business that seeks efficient transportation routes and robust commercial ties,” Flores said.

“Moreover, construction of the bridge will bring immediate benefits, increased job creation and economic activity that will energize our local economy. The influx of workers and professionals will support our shops, restaurants and businesses and will have a ripple effect on our prosperity,” she added.

“But beyond the economic advantages, this bridge symbolizes our commitment to growth and innovation. It represents our vision of the community that is forward-looking, dynamic and connected. By supporting this project, we are sending a message that we are ready to embrace new opportunities and seek a prosperous future for generations to come. Let us work together to turn this vision into reality. Let us build this bridge, not just to connect two points, but to connect our community with the world of possibilities,” Flores finished.
