SPORTS — Slow start dooms Rams in playoff loss

By Brian Argabright

A bad first half was too much for the Del Rio Rams to overcome.

The Rams turned the ball over three times and had no answer for the San Antonio Brennan Bears offense as Del Rio’s season came to an end with a 48-0 loss in the Class 6A, Division II Bi-District round of the playoffs Friday night at Dub Farris Athletic Complex in San Antonio.

The Rams finish the season 4-5. Brennan (9-1) advances to play either Edinburg Vela or Weslaco in the Area round next week.

Interceptions ruined the two of the Rams’ first three drives as Del Rio’s offense struggled to get anything going. By halftime, Del Rio had more turnovers (3) than it did first downs (2). Tyler Turner had two of the interceptions for Brennan as the Bears built a 41-0 lead by intermission.

Unofficially, the Rams had zero yards of offensive in their first eight possessions of the game. For the game, the Rams finished with 44 yards of total offense.

Del Rio didn’t cross midfield until there was less than five minutes to play in the third quarter when Medina found Ricky Haynes for a 12-yard gain to the Brennan 41-yard line.

Brennan had no trouble moving the ball against the Rams defense.

Ashton Dubose was the MVP of the first half. The talented sophomore scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and threw for two more as the Bears built a 41-0 lead by halftime.

Brennan’s final score came with 5:08 left to play as third-string quarterback Silas Roses connected with Jonathan Arcos for a 17-yard touchdown.

Freshman Jason Love carried the Bears’ offense in the second half, racking up 83 yards on 12 carries.

Only one team from District 30-6A advanced to second round of the playoffs. Laredo United South, the district’s fourth seed, moves on after San Antonio Harlan was forced to forfeit due to COVID concerns. District champions Eagle Pass lost to San Antonio Taft, 28-14; and district No. 2 Laredo United lost to Stevens, 22-12.
